The Fourth Boat

Many people I know that have boats have more than one.  I was partially in that category; I had multiple vessels, though not all could be used by more than a few people.  Maybe its just sailors.  I know one that has multiple Force 5s, 2 Flying Scotts and maybe a Star.  But for me, I have 1 sailboat, a rowboat, a dinghy (inflatable) and now a Key West 1900 Sportsman.

I am not ready to bail on sailing; not even close.  The relaxation, no the soul satisfaction that I gain raising the sails, turning off the motor and just hearing the water pass the hull can not be replicated by a power boat.  But while sailing within the confines of the wind and forces of nature is spiritual, much akin to attending church, the power boat is like Mardi Gras.  I can open it up, flying low on the water.  Its not exactly spiritual, but its is SO satisfying.   Of course, both open up the potential for adventures that are very different from one another.

With the Key West 1900, I can get into some very skinny water.  While I can’t spend the night there, I can reach that fish that I could not before or pull ashore at a park I could not access.  The new boat also opens up some activities for the family, like knee boarding, ski-ing or other fun items that require a larger engine and a boat that planes.  One of the things we do often as a family is find a beach and lay on it.  I get bored with that quick, though.  Now, I have an easily trailer-able boat that I can bring, so I can see the beach from the ocean side.  And trust me, if you haven’t seen the beach from a boat on the ocean (especially after a passage), it is much more beautiful than when laying on it.
